As her first act of business after becoming president of Tennessee State University on January 2, Glenda Baskin Glover presented the university with a check for $50,000 to establish an endowed scholarship fund in her name. She hopes the gesture will propel other alumni to financially support the university. “I want our alumni and everyone to get involved in financially supporting our institution, so I am beginning the process with my contribution. I challenge each alumni chapter to match my gift or follow my lead in giving to TSU.”
Before taking over as the eighth president of Tennessee State University, Dr. Glover was dean of the College of Business at Jackson State University in Mississippi. She had been at Jackson State since 1994. Previously, she was chair of the department of accounting at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Glover is a certified public accountant. In addition to her bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Tennessee State University, Dr. Glover holds a law degree from Georgetown University, an MBA from Clark Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in business economics and policy from George Washington University.

Last summer Howard University in Washington, D.C., mounted a major campaign to spruce up its residence halls. Walls were painted, new carpet installed, and bathroom fixtures renovated. In addition, the university replaced more than 2,000 mattresses and added new room and lounge furniture in the residence halls.
As a result of these upgrades, Howard donated 184,000 pounds of bed frames, book cases, desks, chairs, dressers, and other furniture to schools in the United States and Central America. Working with the Institution Recycling Network and the international charity Food for the Poor, Howard packed up nearly 2,300 pieces of furniture for shipments to 12 different sites. Most of the furniture was shipped to schools in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

Writer, folklorist, and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston (pictured) was one of the most-outstanding authors that emerged from the Harlem Renaissance. Over the course of four novels, an autobiography, and dozens of published writings, Hurston has been an inspiration for distinguished writers, such as Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Ralph Ellison, and countless others.
Hurston was the fifth of eight children born to her parents, John and Lucy Ann, in the small town of Notasulga in Alabama. The family uprooted when she was just a toddler, making their new home in Eatonville, Fla. Her father, a preacher, would become mayor of the town, which was one of the first all-black incorporated cities in the United States. After the death of her school teacher mother in 1904, her father remarried and she was sent to boarding school in nearby Jacksonville. Hurston was later expelled after her father stopped paying the tuition.
The Board of Trustees at Howard University is moving forward with plans to create a new PhD program in Communications. The university is also working to develop two new undergraduate programs as well. The program is designed to help the students at Howard University compete in the changing landscape of American media. The programs will begin taking students in the fall of 2013.
A Committee of the Future chaired by Dr. Bishetta Merritt, professor and chair of the department of Radio, Television and Film, helped to organize the plan. The university also used the skills of a panel put together for the express purpose of laying out a strategy for the programs.
