Today, GBN highlights and celebrates 19th century entrepreneur and community builder Bridget “Biddy” Mason, who won her freedom in court and in her time became the wealthiest Black woman in Los Angeles.

Ever hear the one about the enslaved mother of three who sued for her freedom, won… and became the richest Black woman in Los Angeles? It’s no joke.

Bridget “Biddy” Mason was born into slavery in 1818 in Mississippi and is reported to have been taken from her mother as a young child. She learned about herbs and midwifery from older enslaved women and when her owner Robert Smith converted to Mormonism, he decided to move to Utah and join the community there.

Mason and her three children were part of that trek – literally – she had to walk the 2,000 miles behind the wagon caravan, tending to the livestock, her owners and her children along the way. After a few years in Utah, Smith relocated to a Mormon enclave in San Bernadino, California.

Hey, this Lori Lakin Hutcherson, founder and editor in chief of goodblacknews.org, here to share with you a daily drop of Good Black News for Friday, March 18th, 2022, based on the “A Year of Good Black News Page-A-Day Calendar” published by Workman Publishing.

On March 18, 2010, Good Black News was founded as a Facebook page. Within two years, it grew into goodblacknews.org –– a website dedicated to curating and creating posts focused on the good things Black people do, give, and receive all over the world. Reader support for the site across all forms of social media has led to the lovely calendar you are experiencing now, so thank you (or whoever gifted you) – and please continue to spread the word!

Okay, so what I just read was the calendar entry for this day, but I really have so much to add to it. Every year I write a post celebrating the date Good Black News was founded, reflecting on where Good Black News came from – and I’ll post a link to our origin story and how Good Black News was born from an off-hand conversation I had with Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back best-selling author and screenwriter Terry McMillan —  and what we’ve most recently accomplished.

I’d say for this past year, seeing the “A Year of Good Black News” Page-A-Day Calendar for 2022 get published by Workman Publishing, and me starting this podcast based on it, are the biggest ways we’ve grown over the past 12 months. And I hope to grow even more and expand this podcast beyond the calendar when I have more time and opportunity to do so.

Good Black News also managed to get a little press in 2021 when we were featured in an abcnews10 piece on positive news. Also, last month I officially resumed the Q&A column I started in 2020 entitled “Dear Lori” where I respond to questions about white privilege and race that I’ve been asked by readers over the years.

But what truly keeps me, my co-editor Lesa Lakin and all of GBN’s wonderful volunteer contributors going is the outpouring of appreciation you’ve shown us over the years via follows, likes, comments, shares, reblogs, DMs and e-mails (even when we are overwhelmed and can’t respond to them all) and now, listens.

Hey, this Lori Lakin Hutcherson, founder and editor in chief of goodblacknews.org, here to share with you a daily drop of Good Black News for Friday, February 11th, 2022, based on the “A Year of Good Black News Page-A-Day Calendar” published by Workman Publishing.

It’s in the category we call “Lemme Break It Down,” where we explore the origins and meanings of words and phrases rooted in the Black Lexicon and Black culture. Today’s phrase? “The Drinking Gourd.”

“The Drinking Gourd” is a term from African American folklore used by enslaved people to reference “The Big Dipper” constellation. Thus, instructions along the Underground Railroad to “follow the Drinking Gourd” meant to follow the North Star as a guide on the path to freedom.

The term also referred to the hollowed-out gourd used by enslaved people and indentured workers to hold drinking water. The folksong “Follow the Drinking Gourd” was first published in 1928 and has been sung and recorded over the decades.

Right now you are listening to a taste of singer/songwriter Richie Havens’ version from the 1991 album, Songs of the Civil War.

Several children’s stories also employ the phrase and its lore, such as Jeanette Winter’s 1992 illustrated book Follow The Drinking Gourd and the 1993 Morgan Freeman-narrated and Taj Mahal-scored half-hour visual audiobook illustrated by Yvonne Buchanan also titled Follow The Drinking Gourd, which is currently available on YouTube. Happy Black History Month 2022! Good Black News is here once again to celebrate what we work to contribute to and highlight all year long.

This year we’re happy to share we are now offering a daily podcast based on the “A Year of Good Black News” Page-A-Day® Calendar for 2022 published by Workman Publishing, posting one per day as an audio companion to the calendar, plus bonus episodes on the weekends with brand new content.

We call it the “daily drop” because, well, it drops daily, and also because it’s no more than a few minutes long and just a drop of GBN.

We are doing this for a few reasons:

  1. To increase accessibility to the calendar to those need an aural source, who may have difficulty reading or acquiring a physical copy of the calendar but still want to experience the content.
  2. So we can update and expand on some of the entries as well as offer links to relevant sources for those who want to learn more.
  3. To archive the work GBN did to research, write and produce the calendar so it may exist in a digital format long after its physical one has served its purpose.

Starting today, we will embed each podcast into a post here on the main page, with the transcript and show notes, which will then be archived and accessible in the masthead category menu by clicking on “GBN Daily Drop Podcast.” (We will also be adding the January episodes we’ve already recorded.)

This is Tuesday, February 1st, 2022. Today we’re celebrating the start of Black History Month with a West African proverb:

“Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter.”

Tomorrow we’ll get into how Black History Month was created and who created it. But to get a little personal, I selected this quote and placed it on February 1st in GBN’s physical Page-A-Day calendar for 2022 not only because it’s apropos and reflective of the mission of the month ahead, but also because it’s a reminder to me for why I created Good Black News. Not enough of the people, events, stories, accomplishments, acts of heroism, or acts of creation that are part and parcel of African American and thus American culture have been known, let alone celebrated widely in the U.S. or abroad. That has been by design and as current events reveal, continues to be so. So offering this information and sources to learn more about what’s printed every calendar page, on the Good Black News website, on Good Black News social, and in these expanded audio versions, it’s my way of, so to speak, helping the world hear the lion’s roars.
