“Red Tails” and “Scandal” Take Top Honors at 44th NAACP Image Awards

 

“Red Tails” was named top motion picture and “Scandal” top drama series at the 44th annual NAACP Image Awards at the Shrine Auditorium on Friday.  Denzel Washington (“Flight”) and Viola Davis (“Won’t Back Down”) won lead actor and actress honors, while Samuel Jackson and Kerry Washington of “Django Unchained” earned supporting nods.

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” (whose Benh Zeitlin was named top director) and “Red Tails” tied for independent motion picture honors, while “The Intouchables” triumphed for top international feature.  Kerry Washington, previously announced as the President’s Award honoree, was also named top drama actress for “Scandal.”  Also winning acting awards in TV drama were LL Cool J (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), Omar Epps (“House”) and Loretta Devine (“Grey’s Anatomy”).In television comedy, the winners were “The Game” for series and Don Cheadle (“House of Lies”), Cassi Davis and Lance Gross (“Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”) and Vanessa Williams (“Desperate Housewives”) for acting.  Showtime’s “On the Shoulders of Giants: The Story of the Greatest Team You’ve Never Heard Of” was named top documentary. Top reality series was OWN’s “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s.”TV writing awards went to Marc Wilmore (“The Simpsons”) and Cheo Hodari Coker (“Southland”) in comedy and drama, and to Elizabeth Hunter (“Abducted: The Carlina White Story”) in movies. TV directing honors went to Ken Whittingham (“Parks and Recreation”) and Paris Barclay (“Smash”).In music, winners included Usher and Alicia Keys for male and female artist of the year and “I Will Always Love You: The Best Of Whitney Houston” for album of the year.Top literary works were “The Reverend’s Wife” by Kimberla Lawson Roby in fiction and “The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court ” by Jeffrey Toobin in nonfiction.

  1. **I watched bits and parts of the show so I could catch Harry Belafonte..WOW did he say a MOUTHFUL or what?!? I hope the youth pick up the piece on youtube and take a listen..Mr Belafonte is a walking/talking piece of OUR history and American history…A true civil rights activist who not once minced words nor feared doing the right thing..I applaud him and humbly thank him for all he did for all of US..I’m hopeful we’ll have many from this generation that become inspired to also DO more..Jamie Foxx hit on that last night on the show also..
