Solange and several of her musical friends are starring in a new advertising campaign for Calvin Klein. Sporting a denim Trucker jacket and high-waisted jeans, the singer appears in one of the images with fellow musicians Dev Hynes, Kelela, Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek and Kindness’ Adam Bainbridge for the photo shoot.
The artists were handpicked by Solange to promote the idea of family and unity for the brand.
“Big love to @calvinklein , raf simons, and the whole Calvin team for this moment of celebrating my musical family, and for capturing us so authentically us,” Solange wrote in an Instagram post of the ad.

The singer, 31, wore the brand’s signature underwear in another image from the campaign.

Today I woke up to a Facebook post that my roommate from college shared on her feed. Her response to that tauntingly generic Facebook encouragement— “What’s on your mind?” seemed a little more perturbed, urgent and determined than usual: “This is a must read! #blacklivesmatter #takeaknee and if u don’t like my hashtags feel free to unfollow me.” Whoa… okay, she had my attention. I found my glasses and I was in. The share was an essay by Solange Knowles about her recent experience with racial discrimination at a Kraftwerk concert.
The essay is entitled “And Do You Belong? I Do…”, and the title is a pretty good indication of what follows. Here we go, I thought… I am about to read about how someone had caused Beyoncé’s sister to feel some type of way. I knew it would be a truthful expression of Solange having to deal with some, well… ignorant mess. I’ve certainly been there. This was going to be a level of discrimination probably more than the norm though, because why else make such an effort to share?
Though the content of the post is not surprising – again, so many of us have been there – the trash throwing did surprise me. (Yes, someone throws trash at Solange and her family.) Really?? It was taken there??? But instead of responding in the moment in a way that likely would have brought negative attention to her and her family, I have to applaud Solange for instead turning to Twitter, then laying it out there again in writing, as well as covering the anticipated naysayers with intelligent responses.
Here is her essay in its entirety:

In light of GBN’s own essay on personal discrimination:

We are reminded by her action that knowledge is power, well-chosen words are power, and speaking up in protest is power. I think it’s important that she bravely lays it out there for the world to hear.
Thank you, Solange.

Chaka Khan, Brandy and Lianne La Havas have been added to the lineup for our annual ESSENCE Black Women in Music ceremony.
The three performers join this year’s honoree, Jill Scott, in celebrating the best and brightest moments in Black music over ESSENCE’s 45-year history. The 6th annual event recognizes the achievements of the generations of Black women singers who have inspired and paved the way.
Past ESSENCE Black Women in Music honorees include Mary J. Blige, Kelly Rowland, Janelle Monáe, and Solange Knowles. This year’s event will feature an exclusive performance from Scott as well as several other performances from several classic eras of music. And for the first time, community fans will be able to join in the festivities of this invitation-only event.
Ten-time Grammy winner Chaka Khan has been on the scene for over three decades, racking up accolades and earning the praise of her peers, such as Aretha Franklin and Miles Davis. We’ve watched Grammy winner Brandy grow up right before our eyes since her 1995 debut. She helped shape a generation with songs like “I Wanna Be Down” and “The Boy Is Mine.” Newcomer Lianne La Havas burst on the scene in 2012 with her album, Is Your Love Big Enough? The London-based singer attracted the attention of Prince—the two collaborated for his song, “Clouds.”
The ESSENCE Black Women in Music event will kick-off our year-long commemoration of the 45th anniversary of ESSENCE Magazine, where Black women have always—and will continue to—come first.
Catch these women, along with other music trailblazers, during ESSENCE Black Women in Music on February 5 in Los Angeles.

With her new marriage and the success of “Scandal,” Washington definitely had a standout year, and we are sure her Emmy nomination is just icing on the cake. The Hollywood actress shared that she and her stylist of two years, Erin Walsh ,have been working to find the perfect dress for Sunday’s ceremony. “Erin and I really work hand in hand,” she said. “We’re always sending each other ideas and pictures.”
She added, “For me the goal is to feel comfortable, event-appropriate and to be an elevated, more special version of myself or to feel like the best version of myself in that context and just be in the moment.”
Other fashion titles for 2013 went to Solange Knowles for Best Risk-Taking Style, Jennifer Lawrence for Best High Fashion Style, Jessica Chastain for Best Red Carpet Style and Jenna Dewan-Tatum for Best Pregnancy Style.
Past stars who’ve won the “Best Dressed” title include Gwyneth Paltrow, Blake Lively and Zoë Saldana.

Solange Knowles is known as the funkier sister, compared to her glamazon sibling Beyoncé. From her DJing to her dazzling ensembles, her bohemian style has been praised by both fans and fashion industry insiders alike. Now, Solange is parlaying her unique image into her first gig headlining a fashion campaign.
Already a face for the beauty and hair care company Carol’s Daughter, Solange Knowles is now a muse for Madewell, with whom she secured her very first fashion contract. A company owned by J. Crew, Madewell is known for its more youthful approach to the colorful classics that make J.Crew a favorite brand of first lady Michelle Obama.
“Images from the 26-year-old’s first major contract with a fashion label have been released, showing the photogenic singer-songwriter in a series of rainbow-colored looks,” reports the Daily Mail about the newly released photos. Unafraid of color, Knowles also parades in contrasting patterns, an overall approach that matches her signature tastes.
Celebrity style watchers have praised the company’s selection of Solange, as a DJ and eclectic dresser, to head the campaign titled “Mix Well.” The mixing and matching of stylish combinations to produce cute outfits is seen by many as the perfect metaphor for both Madewell’s brand, and the multi-faceted “It Girl” aura Solange has cultivated.
“In what’s possibly the most appropriate slogan ever, Madewell’s newest campaign, ‘Mix Well,’ features DJ/style star/under-30 influencer Solange Knowles. (Mix. DJ. Get it?),” explains the leading fashion web site, Refinery 29. “As the face of the Madewell fall ’12 campaign, Knowles is officially the perfect choice for a collection that has already inspired us to get creative with the way we style ourselves.”
While Solange has made a unique place for herself in New York City’s style scene, this is her first attempt to capitalize on her individual fashion sense in a national campaign. Do you think her unusual image will inspire shoppers to adopt her mix-and-sometimes-mismatch approach to fashion?
