WHM: “Spirit In The Dark” – Celebrating the Brilliant Voice and Pen of Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Born #OnThisDay

It’s commonly known if Aretha Franklin covered a song you wrote and/or recorded, it would from her recording forward be known as her song.

Otis Redding, composer and original performer of “Respect”, said as much at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967: “a girl took [‘Respect’] away from me, a friend of mine, this girl she just took this song.”

Other examples of this usurpation include “I Say A Little Prayer” (composed by Burt Bacharach/Hal David and recorded by Dionne Warwick), “Until You Come Back To Me”(composed by Stevie Wonder) and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (composed by Simon and  Garfunkel).

But today, on what would have been her 83rd birthday, I’m drawn to the songs that Franklin herself composed or co-wrote — ones that shaped her sound and offered insights into her own mind and soul. A collection of those gems, “Rock Steady”: Songs Aretha Franklin Wrote is included below:

While her classic bangers “Think”, “Dr. Feelgood” and “Rock Steady” contain, comment and reflect upon the energy of the civil rights and women’s movements of the 1960s and 1970s — movements rooted in opposing and dismantling white supremacy and patriarchy — and are more relevant than ever in the current political climate, it’s “Spirit in the Dark” that’s hitting hardest for me today.

Granted, “Spirit in the Dark” is an all-time Aretha favorite of mine, because it is simultaneously the most and least gospel gospel song I’ve ever heard.

It’s mind-blowing, really. The slow, rocking gospel intro, the lift into the chorus, the transition into the hyped up “get the spirit” section – the compositional structure is masterfully classic – yet also feels completely secular and modern in how Franklin arranges it.

The lyrics are as uplifting as they are raunchy and Aretha’s delivery of the song is deliciously desirous and divine. This intentional blurring of what were traditionally thought of as separate lines/sounds/philosophies/lifestyles brings a wholeness, a completeness and a joyousness to both the sacred and profane.

Because really, at the end of the day, life is life, love is love, joy is joy and rapture is rapture. All avenues to it that don’t harm others are all good and it is my strong belief that Aretha knew this and was expressing precisely this in this original song of hers – and throughout her life.

“Spirit in the Dark” expresses for me what I’ve been feeling since the fully disappointing result of the 2024 Presidential Election – the desire to connect to real spirit or be a real spirit amid the collective darkness and doom. To live our truths no matter what systemic forces attempt to proscribe or prohibit for us.

Also, it gave me the glorious excuse to rewatch and share the 15 minute video above of the live 1971 performance of “Spirit In The Dark” at the Filmore West where Aretha plays the Wurlitzer, spirit dances across the stage (damn if she doesn’t do an early version of the moonwalk in here!) and spontaneously brings up Ray Charles to riff and workout on the track as well.

As I wrote several years ago in elegy to her 2018 passing, among so many other things, Aretha Franklin was a Black woman from Detroit by way of Memphis who forever looked like my grandmother, my mother, my auntie, my deacon – and lived in the kind of body brought to this nation solely to serve this nation, not to sway it.

Yet that’s exactly what she did, with the breadth of a brilliance that will be revered and remembered forever.

“How I Got Over”: Celebrating Aretha Franklin with Comprehensive Playlist of Her Cover Songs on Her Birthday (LISTEN)

It’s always nice to have an excuse to celebrate the Queen of Soul and her music. Although this week in particular it’s been a somewhat fraught proposition, as the National Geographic Channel began airing its Genius: Aretha series starring Cynthia Erivo on Sunday, to which some of Franklin’s immediate family publicly objected.

But if, like me, you’re inclined to want to celebrate Aretha on what would have been her 79th birthday and can’t wait for the MGM feature Respect starring Jennifer Hudson (which, so far, the family does approve of) to come out, you can always rewatch the glorious Amazing Grace concert film released in 2019, or go right to the source and listen to all Aretha all day.

For my 2020 celebration, I compiled a collection of her original works in a Spotify playlist called  “Rock Steady”: Songs Aretha Franklin Wrotein honor of her ability to compose incredible music and lyrics that have stood the test of time, a talent which is often overshadowed by Aretha’s unparalleled singing mastery.

This year, I chose to celebrate Aretha Franklin’s lifelong love of all musical styles and her unmatched ability to turn any song from any genre from any time by anybody into her own unique moment. Below is the compilation playlist “How I Got Over”: Aretha Franklin’s Cover Songs

In it, you’ll find the songs you already know were recorded by others that Aretha made her own signature songs (“Respect,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Until You Come Back to Me”), along with songs where her version became as famous as the original, if not more (“You’re All I Need To Get By,” “I Say A Little Prayer,” “Wholy Holy,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Don’t Play That Song,” “Son of A Preacher Man”).

Also included are songs you may not know she covered (many were deep cuts on LPs or only recently released) but as soon as you hear Aretha’s version you won’t be able to forget it (“At Last,” “A Change Is Gonna Come,” “A Song For You,” “What a Fool Believes,” “I Want to Be With You,” “My Kind of Town (Detroit Is)”).

Aretha also dips into her Detroit roots with her covers of Motown classics like “My Guy,” “Tracks of My Tears” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” as well as her love of her British Invasion contemporaries with covers of The Beatles“Eleanor Rigby,” “Let It Be” and “The Long and Winding Road” and The Rolling Stones‘ “Satisfaction” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”

Franklin effortlessly shows off her jazz chops on “Moody’s Mood,” “Skylark,” “How Glad I Am” and “Crazy He Calls Me” and her devastating blues acumen and feeling with “Today I Sing The Blues,” “The Thrill is Gone,” “Night Time Is The Right Time” and “Why I Sing The Blues.”

“Over The Rainbow,” “Somewhere” and “I Dreamed A Dream” let us all know a career on Broadway or movie musicals, should she have wanted it, would have been Aretha’s for the taking, and her takes on traditional gospel classics like “How I Got Over,” “What a Friend We Have In Jesus,” “Oh Happy Day” (with Mavis Staples), and, of course, “Amazing Grace” make it simple for anyone needing proof of God to listen and say, “Oh, okay. THAT.”

For those who love holiday fare, Aretha’s got that covered too, with undeniable versions of “Winter Wonderland,” “Silent Night” and “The Christmas Song.”

As late as 2014, at age 72, Aretha Franklin was still showing the world what she could do to a song she deigned to sing.

Franklin released an entire album of covers entitled Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics, where she famously took on “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele, Alicia Keys“No One” and created must-listen mash-up versions of Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman/Respect” where Aretha blends those two classics together, and Gloria Gaynor‘s “I Will Survive,” which she mixes with Destiny’s Child‘s “Survivor.” 

All the songs mentioned and more are on the 85-track playlist above. There are even more enticing covers in the Aretha Franklin catalogue worth exploring, but at five and a half hours, I definitely feel this playlist is a great place to start.

Aretha Franklin Exhibit to Open at Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit

According to rollingstone.com, an exhibit dedicated to the life and legacy of musical legend Aretha Franklin will open this week at Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

The estate-approved “Think: A Tribute to the Queen of Soul” arrives this Tuesday and will exhibit at the Wright Museum until January 21st, 2019. “This is an opportunity for people to come back and engage, reminisce and reflect,” Wright museum board member Kelly Major Green told the Detroit Free Press. “It’s the beginning of a much longer expression of who Aretha is.”

The exhibit will feature wardrobe, shoes, video displays and photos from Franklin’s decades-long career, including a copy of the first-ever recording Franklin released, a 1956 vinyl of “Never Grow Old” by “Aretha Franklin, Daughter of Rev. C.L. Franklin.”

The Charles H. Wright Museum previously hosted Franklin’s public viewing following the Queen of Soul’s death from pancreatic cancer at the age of 76. The “red, lace-trimmed ruffled suit and crimson satin pumps” that Franklin wore at the public viewing will display in the “Think” exhibit.

Over the exhibit’s four-month tenure at the museum, curators will rotate items in and out of display to “reflect the same ever-changing dynamics that marked the singer’s own life,” the Detroit Free Press writes.

The Franklin estate is also planning a long-term exhibit dedicated to the Queen of Soul housed at an undetermined location in 2020.

Aretha Franklin Looking to Open Detroit Entertainment Complex to Further City's Renewal

The Queen of Soul told WWJ-AM she wants to open an entertainment venue in Detroit that would include a nightclub and fine dining.
It would also include “a five-star night club for dining and dancing, the band, the whole nine yards,” as well as a museum, she added.
Franklin said in Thursday’s interview she’s “glad that Detroit came through the bankruptcy with flying colors.” She says she loves how Detroit is enjoying a renaissance and that she’s “going to be part of that renaissance.”
Downtown Detroit has been a hotbed of redevelopment since the city emerged from Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in December.
Franklin says she’s found a potential location downtown, with details to be announced later.
She performs Saturday at Detroit’s Chene Park.
