Today, on World Purple Day, which was started in 2008 to increase worldwide awareness around epilepsy, we offer a quote from Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Alice Walker:

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.”

That quote of course, is from Walker’s acclaimed 1982 novel The Color Purple, a phrase and a title she will forever be remembered for. It was recently announced that The Color Purple, having already been a successful movie directed by Steven Spielberg in 1985, oh, it was also a Tony Award-winning 2005 Broadway sensation that has had numerous revivals… well, now The Color Purple will become a 2023 movie musical based on the Broadway version.

And it will star Fantasia, Taraji P. Russell Wilson and Ciara Donate $1.75 Million to Washington School via Why Not You Foundation

According to the Associated Press, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and Ciara, the Grammy-winning performer, through their Why Not You Foundation, are contributing about $1.75 million to rebrand an existing charter program known as Cascade Midway Academy, just south of Seattle.

The Cascade high school program was set to debut this year before the pandemic forced founders  to delay opening. The superstar couple’s generosity will be honored with the school’s name change to Why Not You Academy.

Wilson and Ciara said to the Associated Press they jumped at the opportunity to help launch the school. It focuses on academics, personalized student plans and internships and mentorships for underserved Black and brown students. The couple said they hope this will be the first of many Why Not You Academy sites across the country.

“I’m really confident…about the team that we have here and how we’re building things out,” Ciara said. “We’re passionate about everything. We’re all in on this.”

The Why Not You Academy is expected to open in fall 2021.

Russell Wilson and Ciara Pledge to Donate One Million Meals to Food Lifeline and Feeding America in Wake of Pandemic

According to NBCSports.com, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and singer Ciara have pledged 1 million meals to Food Lifeline and Feeding America in an effort to help keep Americans in need fed in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

To quote the article:

“Obviously this worldwide pandemic, coronavirus, is changing the world, second-by-second, minute-by minute. People are losing loved ones, the elderly and the young, people in between. … So what we’ve decided to do is partner with our local food bank in Seattle, Seattle Food Lifeline, and we’re going to donate a million meals and hopefully make a difference,” Wilson said in a video message.

Wilson and Ciara mentioned people losing jobs in the wake of increasing shut down initiatives in an effort to keep the spread of the virus from proliferating an exponential rates. They’ve already seen friends in the area that work for companies such as Alaska Airlines, the Seattle Sounders – where the pair are part owners – and Seattle Children’s Hospital hit with the effects of the virus.

“We want to encourage every out there to join us in whatever way that you can, big or small,” Ciara said. “Everything makes a difference. Everything that we do together makes a difference and together we will conquer this tough time that we’re going through.”

The Feeding America network of food banks “distributes 4.3 billion meals each year through food pantries and meal programs throughout the United States and leads the nation to engage in the fight against hunger.”

Keke Palmer, Questlove, Ciara and Others Encourage Students to Apply to College Via Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative’s “Laundry” Campaign

It’s November! And that means it’s National College Application Month. Celebrate by joining former first lady Michelle Obama alongside Keke Palmer, Ciara, Bailee Madison, Karlie Kloss, Nick Cannon, Questlove, Kelly Rowland and many more for the launch of Reach Higher’s all-new “Laundry” campaign!

In the hands of college admissions offices across the nation are applications for entrance into college. Why not be one of them? Students across the country are encouraged to pledge to apply. After all, Knowledge is Power and Reach Higher has rolled out a fun, encouraging campaign to get students to apply.

The celebration began Thursday, November 8th, as celebrities and other notable figures shared social media posts encouraging students across the country to pledge to apply to college. In exchange for making this commitment, celebrities are pledging to do students’ laundry for an entire semester. (In reality, the celebrities will not be able to do anyone’s laundry, but they do care a lot about students’ education.) Here’s what they have to say:

Reach Higher is an initiative started by former First Lady Michelle Obama during her time in the White House, dedicated to inspiring every student in the U.S. to complete their education past high school by attending a professional training program, a community college or a traditional university.

I’ve always had this sort of love/hate relationship with the month of September. Part of me feels like September is just a pushy month with attitude. It represents the end of summer fun with a blaring nudge toward back to business, back to school… back to get up and get stuff done!
But if I’m going to keep it positive, September also represents the beginning of beautiful, new and exciting things… and hopefully if you’re in a hot state – some cooler weather. Here are few fun, interesting things happening this month.  Enjoy!

The Week Designers Showed Black Women Love Feat. Tinashe, Ciara And Joan Smalls

On the heels of Teen Vogue giving prominence to Aya Jones, Lineisy Montero and Imaan Hammam on their August 2015 cover and Karrueche securing a new gig at Wilhelmina Models’ New York division last week, the melanin movement spilled into this week as Tinashe, Ciara, and Joan Smalls all scored new gigs in the fashion world.
As if performing for her idol Janet Jackson at the BET Awards and hopping on Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint Tour wasn’t enough, Tinashe is moving way up, starring in Ralph Lauren’s Denim & Supply fall campaign. Not only is the 22-year-old prepping us for autumn with classic plaid looks paired with vintage jeans, but she also had the opportunity to cover Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Rhythm Band’s iconic 1970’s hit “Express Yourself” beside Cody Simpson. Ciara’s 2015 has revolved around love and fashion and after being chosen as the latest celeb to rep Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, CiCi danced her way to Brand Ambassador status for Topshop USA. The mother showed face at the Fashion Retail Academy Awards in London Wednesday night, rocking a trench coat-styled black dress from the retailer with matching open toe heels where owner, Sir Phillip Green made the official announcement.

For those that weren’t in attendance, Ciara took to her Instagram account to share a selfie she snagged with the billionaire CEO and made the public service announcement herself. And of course, in true gentlemen fashion, Ci’s boyfriend Russell Wilson showed love and support via his Twitter saying, “Congrats! @TopShop couldn’t pick a more Dynamic woman!” Cue the aww’s here.

Joan Smalls is still doing big things in the modeling industry, this time showing off her physique in her undies for Calvin Klein. Also landing a fall campaign for a major brand, Smalls’ facial structure in the ad may have actually stole the shine off the intimates collection, itself, with the tagline ‘the original sexy’ fitting for the Afro-Latina model.

Last night, Black Entertainment Television held its 15th annual BET Awards celebration, honoring musical legends Janet Jackson and Smokey Robinson, as well as radio and television personality Tom Joyner with special tributes and awards.  Jason Derulo, Ciara and Tinashe did a tribute in dance to Jackson before she received her Ultimate Icon Award from longtime producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
