Howard University Donates Dorm Furniture to Schools in Central America

dorm_furniture_121226Last summer Howard University in Washington, D.C., mounted a major campaign to spruce up its residence halls. Walls were painted, new carpet installed, and bathroom fixtures renovated. In addition, the university replaced more than 2,000 mattresses and added new room and lounge furniture in the residence halls.
As a result of these upgrades, Howard donated 184,000 pounds of bed frames, book cases, desks, chairs, dressers, and other furniture to schools in the United States and Central America. Working with the Institution Recycling Network and the international charity Food for the Poor, Howard packed up nearly 2,300 pieces of furniture for shipments to 12 different sites. Most of the furniture was shipped to schools in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

Prince to be Honored at Tribute Concert in Carnegie Hall

The music of Prince will be honored at a special concert at Carnegie Hall in March and The Rootsand Talib Kweli will be among those that pay tribute.
The show, the latest in an annual concert series put on by New York entrepreneur Michael Dorf, will raise money for various music education organizations, including Music Unites, the Pinwheel Project and the Center for Arts Education. Past shows have paid tribute to The Rolling StonesThe WhoJoni Mitchell and Elton John among other luminaries.
In addition to Talib Kweli and The Roots, performers at the show who will interpret Prince songs will include the Blind Boys of AlabamaDeVotchKaLiving ColourMadeleine Peyroux and more. Tickets for the concert, to take place March 7, are available online here.

Rapper T.I. will announce the launch of his global “Give Like a King” campaign this Friday.  The rapper, actor and reality TV star is returning to his Bankhead neighborhood in Georgia to unveil his new campaign.

According to BCG, he is joining efforts with Veterans Empowerment Organization of Georgia (VEO) to help support homeless veterans.  VEO is an organization that brings food, shelter, and services to veterans in need.

First lady Michelle Obama dropped off 900 gifts yesterday as part of a Toys for Tots event in Washington, D.C. An annual drive of the Marine Corps, the campaign received the huge donation from the White House where Mrs. Obama began collecting toys for the program in 2009.

The toys were collected from residents of the White House, including President Obama and the first couple’s daughters Sasha and Malia, in addition to employees, friends and corporate donors.

Rony Delgarde immigrated to the United States from Haiti with only $5 and a Bible. The first thing he saw when he landed at Miami International Airport were all the colorfully-painted buildings.  “People paint their house yellow, white, red, blue and I said, ‘Wow, there’s so much paint in this country!'” Delgarde says.” I said, ‘When I get money in this country, I’m going to buy paint and take paint back home.'”

From that idea, Global Paint for Charity was born. Delgarde, who is 38 and works as a health care consultant, states the mission: “to recycle leftover paint from businesses and residents, processes it and then donate it to vulnerable families in developing countries all around the world.”

Giving Back: Mike Tyson Launches Children’s Foundation

Former world heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson (pictured) has traveled quite a road from fighter, spousal abuser and convicted rapist, to ear biter, pigeon lover, actor and now, children’s philanthropist. And to prove it, Tyson has launched his very own charity, aptly named, ‘Mike Tyson Cares Foundation.’

The organization’s mission is to ‘“give kids a fighting chance” by providing innovative centers that provide for the comprehensive needs of kids from broken homes.  It will also provide such essentials as healthcare and school assistance, shelter, mentoring, job mentoring and any other needs that the foundation deems necessary for the child in question seeking assistance.

Cam Newton Donates $150,000 to Three North Carolina Schools

The Cam Newton Foundation has donated $150,000 to three Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.  The money will be divided evenly among Bradley, Randolph and Thomasboro Academy middle schools and will be used for activities and resources that boost school pride, the foundation said.  Newton, a second-year quarterback with the Carolina Panthers, made the official announcement in an auditorium packed with cheering children and teachers at Randolph Middle. He encouraged the students to stay in school and get an education, regardless of their career plans.  The donation was part of the foundation’s newly formed School Pride Program.

NBA champion Dwyane Wade has hosted his first fashion fundraiser Thursday evening in Miami for his philanthropic organization, Wade’s World Foundation.  A Night on the RunWade included live performances, a scrumptious three-course dinner, and a fashion show featuring clothing from the likes of Dsquared2, Versace and The Webster. The Miami Heat player made his catwalk debut and wooed the audience with a backward somersault as he walked the runway.
