Philip Treacy Features All Black Models On The Runway at London Fashion Week


While models of color were largely underrepresented on the catwalk at New York Fashion Week, milliner Philip Treacy made a bold statement at London Fashion Week by featuring all black models at his Spring 2013 presentation.
25 African-American models participated in the show, which introduced Treacy’s elaborate collection of headpieces alongside original costumes from Michael Jackson’s estate. Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Nyasha Matonhodze were among them.  Treacy’s participation also fittingly included a soundtrack of Michael Jackson’s hits and an introduction by superstar and avid hat-wearer Lady Gaga.  Watch video below:

Herman Banning, an aviator who made a series of historic firsts, is an inspiring tale worthy of being retold for generations on end.  Born James Herman Banning in Oklahoma in 1899, he would later move his family to the town of Ames, Iowa in 1919. Enrolling into Iowa State, Banning briefly studied electrical engineering but later ended his collegiate career after being called to the skies.

WASHINGTON — Americans are feeling markedly better about the country’s future and about Barack Obama‘s job performance, but the president’s re-election race against Republican Mitt Romney remains a neck-and-neck proposition as Election Day creeps ever closer, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll.  Buoyed by good mojo coming out of last month’s national political conventions, Obama’s approval rating is back above 50 percent for the first time since May, and the share of Americans who think the country is moving in the right direction is at its highest level since just after the death of Osama bin Laden in May 2011.

A long-awaited report on the U.S. government’s controversial gun-trafficking operation known as “Fast and Furious” released Wednesday found no evidence that Attorney General Eric Holder knew of the botched effort to trace the flow of guns to Mexico’s drug cartels prior to its public unraveling in January 2011.  The report by the Justice Department’sInspector General Michael Horowitz said there is “no evidence that … Holder was informed about Operation Fast and Furious, or learned about the tactics employed by ATF in the investigation” before Congress began pressing him for information about it in early 2011.

IATP Food and Community Fellow and vegan chef Bryant Terry was named a member of the American Chef Corps, part of the State Department’s Diplomatic Culinary Partnership. The American Chef Corps will create a network of more than eighty culinary leaders dedicated to sharing the diverse culinary traditions of the United States by hosting meals for diplomats and providing cooking demonstrations at home or abroad, among other opportunities.
