The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has announced that it has entered into a multi-year $1.7 million partnership with the Wells Fargo Foundation to provide scholarships and leadership development training for students at 47 state-operated historically Black colleges and universities.
To qualify for the scholarships students at the HBCUs need to have a grade point average of 3.0 or above, demonstrate financial need, and show the potential for leadership.
In addition, Wells Fargo will continue to support the TMCF’s Teacher Quality and Retention Program (TQRP) that supports Black men who are committed to a career in teaching.
“Thanks to Wells Fargo’s generosity and ongoing partnership, a cadre of extremely talented future leaders will be able to earn a college degree,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., TMCF’s president and CEO. “In addition, Wells Fargo’s commitment allows HBCU’s to continue their tradition of producing highly qualified and committed classroom teachers. Wells Fargo’s support to the TQRP initiative will have a lasting impact, helping us educate American children in communities all across the country.”

15-year NBA veteran Rasheed Wallace, who last played in the league during the ’09-’10 season, has been working out with the New York Knicks over the last week and reportedly informed the team that he will sign with them this season.
Wallace, who last played for the Boston Celtics, did play for head coach Mike Woodson before. Woodson was an assistant coach to Larry Brown on the 2004 Detroit Pistons who won the NBA championship.

A brave 16-year-old boy in Southampton, Hampshire in the United Kingdom risked his own life after running in a burning home to save a 2-year-old boy, Adam, the Southern Daily Echo reports.
Nelson Fonangwan was awaken by the screams of his neighbor, Aneta Jedlikoswka, whose child was locked inside of her burning house. When the teen reached the mom, she was frantic.
“She didn’t speak good English and she pointed to me inside the house and said ‘baby’, I knew I had to do something so that’s when I helped by breaking the rest of the glass and I went in and got the baby,” Fonangwan told The Echo.
“The smoke was really thick you couldn’t even breathe, I don’t know how the baby was coping because I was choking. I didn’t think too much because it was frantic but once I heard baby I thought I have to do this. I was a bit nervous though because it was fire.
“When I brought her baby out, she was really relieved her arm was really bad she hugged him tight.”

NEW YORK — As President Barack Obama widened his lead over Mitt Romney in polls this month, traders at hedge funds and investment firms began shooting emails to clients with a similar theme: It’s time to start preparing for an Obama victory.
What many in the market worry about isn’t that high earners may pay more in taxes if Obama wins. They worry that federal spending cuts and tax hikes scheduled for 2013 will kick in on Jan. 1 and start pulling the country into another recession. The higher taxes and lower spending would total $600 billion. They take effect automatically unless Congress and the White House reach a deal before then.

Even as a child growing up in South Carolina, Jerome Singleton Jr. displayed a natural talent for sports.
In seventh-grade, he made his middle school’s basketball team. By the time he reached seventeen he was one of the top 100 high school football players in the state. Singleton says he was able to compete alongside his able-bodied peers not only because of sporting prowess, but due to an unyielding determination to succeed. “I believe I have been blessed with a gift to excel in different facets of my life.”
The middle child of three children, Singleton recalls a loving and supportive family home. He credits his parents, Jerome and Jacqueline, for their selfless support and high expectations, despite his disability. Born in July 1986 and raised in Greenwood, South Carolina, Singleton was born without a fibula and had his right leg amputated below the knee when he was just 18 months old. Talking about overcoming challenges, he says, “I want to show people they can change their life.”
