MUSIC MONDAY: “AfroBowie” – A Soul-Filled David Bowie Collection (LISTEN)

by Marlon West (FB: marlon.west1 Twitter: @marlonw IG: stlmarlonwest Spotify: marlonwest)

I’m back with another batch of tracks. AfroBowie” is a collection devoted to David Bowie, who,  in a 1976 Playboy interview, described his own album Young Americans as “the definitive plastic soul record. It’s the squashed remains of ethnic music as it survives in the age of Muzak, written and sung by a white limey.”

[spotifyplaybutton play=”https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1jO16S5awIEKB9cpxkcTJf?si=9c8629b0d66f41fa”]

Though those funky soulful tracks made Bowie one of the few white performers to be invited to perform on Soul Train.

He would also go on to call out MTV on not featuring Black artists: “I’m floored by the fact that there are so few Black artists featured on [MTV]. Why is that?” “The only few black artists one does see are on in about 2:30 in the morning until 6:00,” Bowie continued, “Very few are featured prominently during the day.”

Almost a decade before James Brown would become constantly sampled, the Godfather of Soul would borrow Carlos Alomar’s guitar riff from David Bowie’s crossover hit “Fame” to create his track “Hot”.

Bowie would later team up with Queen Latifah for a version “Fame” in 1990. This collection features Bowie covers from Black artists like Robert Glasper & Bilal, Durand Jones & The Indications, Rhonda Dakar and others.

There are Bowie tracks written with his longtime collaborator Alomar including: “D.J.”, “Fame”, “Never Let Me Down”, “Red Money” and “The Secret Life of Arabia”. And of course his team-up with young Luther Vandross on “Young Americans” is in the mix.

I’ve included David Bowie’s covers of “Almost Grown” by Chuck Berry, Nina Simone’s “Wild is the Wind” and versions of “Knock on Wood” (by Eddie Floyd) and “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow” (by Ohio Players) from DAVID LIVE.

There are a few tracks from Ziggy Stardub, a spectacular reggae recasting “Ziggy Stardust” by the Easy Star All-Stars.

There are also songs from the tribute record Modern Love. It features covers from across Bowie’s catalog by Helado Negro, Khruangbin, Jeff Parker, We Are KING, Meshell Ndegeocello, and more. P

lus, Seu Jorge’s beautiful set of Bowie covers from Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Hope you enjoy AfroBowie as much as I’ve enjoyed making it.

As always, stay safe, sane, and kind. See ya next month.

Don Cornelius Foundation Kicks Off Suicide Prevention Week With Sept. 7 Event in Los Angeles

Chicago's 40th Anniversary Soul Train Concert To Honor Don Cornelius
The Don Cornelius Foundation (DCF) is kicking off Suicide Prevention Week themed “I AM THE FACE,” with an afternoon of music and fellowship on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 3:00 pm at the popular Post & Beam restaurant in Los Angeles, CA.
The DCF is a non-profit organization formed by the family of Donald “Don” C. Cornelius, creator of “Soul Train,” who ended his life by suicide on February 1, 2012. Radio personality Pat Prescott from 94.7 The Wave will host.
Renaissance man Don Cornelius’ entrepreneurial spirit and vast contribution to television, music, the arts and popular culture is unparalleled. The foundation – whose slogan is ‘Life is beautiful, precious and worth living’ – was established to provide awareness, prevention and support for those contemplating suicide and survivors who have lost loved ones to suicide.
Committed to identifying and supporting programs assisting those in transition and in need of healing, DCF has chosen three organizations for initial grants in 2014, namely New Directions for Veterans, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Urban LA, and The Los Angeles LGBT Center. These organizations are committed to serving underserved, at-risk communities and to increasing their capacities within the African-American community.
Helmed by Restaurateur Brad Johnson and Chef Govind Armstrong, Post & Beam offers California cuisine with a touch of soul to the surrounding Baldwin Hills neighborhood and beyond. “We’re pleased to be associated with Post & Beam” says Don’s son Tony Cornelius who heads up DCF.
Post & Beam is located at 3767 Santa Rosalia Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90008. Tickets can be purchased online at:

Earvin "Magic" Johnson Buys 'Soul Train' Rights, Developing Musical Based On Don Cornelius!

Don Cornelius hosting “Soul Train”

It was much earlier this year when it was announced that there was renewed interest in exploiting the Soul Train franchise – thanks to Don Cornelius’ death.  The news then was that Soul Train Holdings was working with WME to find ways to, as I said, exploit and grow the brand, which would include a film, a stage musical AND a TV show.  “Certainly we want to proceed in a way that will highlight the contribution of Don to the creation of the brand and its subsequent impact on American culture,” said Kenard Gibbs, CEO of Soul Train Holdings.
However, there were some rights issues that they’d have to deal with, notably the music used in each episode of the series. But they were confident that wouldn’t be a problem.  Things seem to be in motion again as it’s been announced today that Earvin Magic” Johnson and his business partners have bought the rights to the Soul Train franchise for “several million dollars,” and are planning an upcoming musical based on the life of Don Cornelius, according to the NY Post.   The musical, which is being aimed towards Broadway, will focus on the once mega-hit variety show.
