MUSIC MONDAY: “Ear Food” – A New Jazz Playlist (LISTEN)

by Marlon West (FB: marlon.west1 Twitter: @marlonw IG: stlmarlonwest Spotify: marlonwest)

Happy #JazzAppreciationMonth, good people! For most the word “Jazz” conjures up images of the giants like Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, and Louis Armstrong.

Though this collection, Ear Food: A New Jazz Playlist features a new school of Jazz artists re-imagining and reinventing Jazz for today:

They are staying true to the game while infusing a spectrum of R&B, Hip-Hop and other influences.

Many will recognize names like Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Meshell Ndegeocello, Esperanza Spalding, and the late Roy Hargrove, but this collection features some new talents that are not as well-known.

I hope you’ll dig artists like: Ezra Collective, Al Strong, Steam Down, Somi, Nubya Garcia, Tom Misch, and Moses Boydtoo.

It’s great to see and hear a new generation adopt and reinvent the sound of a timeless genre, proving that Jazz not only still lives, but thrives.

While I’ve generally moved to monthly offerings, I’ll be back during this month devoted to Jazz appreciation with another collection next week.

Stay sane, safe, and kind!

MUSIC MONDAY: “Stand With Each Other” – Great Jazz Releases from 2020 (LISTEN)

by Marlon West (FB: marlon.west1 Twitter: @marlonw IG: stlmarlonwest Spotify: marlonwest)

Jazz has been around for 100 years and while many think it’s music from a bygone era, it is still very much alive.

During this year where so much has stopped and languished, fine music has flourished. Here is a collection of jazz recordings released in 2020.

There’s an unleashed record by the legendary Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, new music by the masterful Jimmy Heath, a collection of remixed and covers by Blue Note Records, and several young artists opening cans musical whoop-ass.

The playlist features women and men from around the world pushing the music in new ways, such as Nubya GarciaAmbrose Akinmusire and Jyoti. They are creating musical hybrids with funk, rock, hip-hop, and afro-pop.

Many artists are using their music for activism and social change. Don’t let the smooth taste fool you, after a century, jazz is still moving forward and blazing new trails.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday week. Back next week with my favorites of 2020. And again be safe, sane, and kind.

MUSIC MONDAY: Weekly Playlist From GBN – “Hidden Jazz Figures” (LISTEN)

Over the weekend, Good Black News offered a remembrance and playlist of one of the world’s most iconic and influential jazz singers, Ella Fitzgerald, in honor of her 103rd birthday. But what about those women who also contributed mightily to jazz but are not commonly recognized?

GBN’s Marlon West answers that question this week by offering a comprehensive and compelling curation of female jazz musicians he calls Feed The Fire: A Celebration of Women in Jazz.”

In Marlon’s words:

“This week’s playlist is inspired by Giovanni Russonello’s New York Times piece, “10 Women in Jazz Who Never Got Their Due.” This collection includes the oft-forgotten artists mentioned in the piece, including Mary Lou Williams, Jutta Hipp, Marian McPartland, Hazel Scott, Dorothy Ashby, Shirley Scott and Alice Coltrane, though it also features several current artists who are also frequently overlooked like Vi Redd, Nubya Garcia, Linda Oh and others.

This one was a real pleasure and education to compile. Do enjoy. And stay safe, you all.”
