According to huffingtonpost.com, musical icon Beyoncé received unprecedented control over the cover of the upcoming September issue of Vogue magazine, and in turn hired Tyler Mitchell, 23, to be her photographer. Mitchell will become the first black photographer to shoot a cover in the publication’s 126-year history.

Vogue, according to two sources who are familiar with the agreement between Vogue and Beyoncé, is contractually obligated to give Beyoncé full control over the cover, the photos of her inside the magazine and the captions, which she has written herself and are in long-form. Beyoncé is also not granting Vogue a sit-down interview for the September 2018 issue, as is typical of its cover subjects.

Mitchell, a New York University graduate from Atlanta, quickly became a recognized name in the art world through his work in Cuba and his featured work on Instagram.

The New York Times’ “Up Next” series featured Mitchell in December.  Huffingtonpost.com writes that 23-year-old first gained attention in 2015 with his self-published book of photos, El Paquete, which focused on Cuban skate culture and architecture. Mitchell captured the book’s 108 photos while in Cuba for six weeks as part of a documentary photography program, according to the Times.

Mitchell also photographed Parkland shooting survivors including Sarah Chadwick, Nza-Ari Khepra, Emma Gonzalez and Jaclyn Corin for Teen Vogue’s piece on the #NeverAgain gun control movement.

“I depict black people and people of color in a really real and pure way,” Mitchell told The New York Times in December. “There is an honest gaze to my photos.”

New Jersey Teen Kyemah McEntyre Silences Haters with Epic Handmade Prom Dress, Gets Voted Prom Queen

The thought of a home-made dress often conjures up images of Cinderella (before the Fairy Godmother intervenes, obviously) and outfits made of floral curtains, a la The Sound of Music.
But New Jersey teen Kyemah McEntyre is here to sway your opinion once and for all. For her senior prom, the 18-year old artist designed her own gown, with full-length sleeves, a plunging neckline, and full ball skirt, which was then made into a reality by local seamstress Markell. And let’s just say, the stunning dress wouldn’t have been out of place on the red carpet at Cannes.

To complement the gown’s bold red, yellow, and green colors and eclectic tribal print, McEntyre kept her jewelry minimal, yet still statement-making, wearing just a gold chocker necklace and a super hero-esque headpiece across her forehead.

“This is for always being labeled as, “ugly” or “angry”. Thank God, stereotypes are just opinions,” she captioned an Instagram photo showing her wearing her design, though it seems haters don’t have much voting power at her school, anyway: McEntyre’s evening ended with her being crowned prom queen.

And while senior prom might not exactly be on the same level as, say… New York Fashion Week, we wouldn’t be surprised if McEntyre ends up showing there one day. According to her blog, the teen plans to attend Parsons the New School for Design—the same place where Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Donna Karan learned the ropes—as a freshman this fall.

Kerry Washington Graces the June Cover of Elle Magazine

kerry washington elle
Kerry Washington has landed the cover of Elle‘s June 2013 issue, making it the actress’ first major fashion mag cover. Washington poses in a sweet cardigan and plaid shorts by Marc Jacobs, with just a hint of a Carine Gilson Lingerie Couture bra peeking out.  It shouldn’t be too surprising that Kerry’s scored a major cover — not only is she a Best-Dressed List regular with enviable red carpet style, but she also stars in TV’s hottest show, Scandal, and was part of the massively successful Django Unchained.
Yet with all that success, Kerry had yet to pose for a fashion magazine cover up till now. Women’s Health, Ebony, Essence, Vibe — plenty of non-fashion glossies have chosen Kerry for their covers. She even shared the cover of Elle‘s “Women in Hollywood” issue in December 2012. But the likes of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar eluded her. Until now.
