Oprah Winfrey to Join CBS' "60 Minutes" as Contributor

Oprah Winfrey, the inspirational talk-show host, TV executive, billionaire and interviewer, will join CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes” in the fall, the network announced Tuesday.
“Her body of work is extraordinary, including thousands of interviews with people from all walks of life. She is a remarkable and talented woman with a level of integrity that sets her apart and makes her a perfect fit for ’60 Minutes,’” said Jeff Fager, the program’s executive producer, in a prepared statement. “I am thrilled that she will be bringing her unique and powerful voice to our broadcast.”
Winfrey has a longstanding and unique relationship with CBS. The company agreed red on 1999 to purchase King World Productions, a syndicated-TV powerhouse that launched Winfrey’s famous and durable talk show. At the time, Winfrey, a substantial King World shareholder, was expected to control one-half a percentage point of CBS stock.
The relationship stands today: Winfrey is an executive producer of CBS’ syndicated “Dr. Phil” program. CBS did not offer details of the types of segments Winfrey might contribute to “60 Minutes.” But she is known for her ability to get even the most famous actor or actress to disclose close-held feelings and emotions. One of the show’s most penetrating interviewers of celebrities, Morley Safer, retired from the newsmagazine last year, just days before passing away.

UPDATE with I Am The Greatest marathon:  Television specials and special programming for the late Muhammad Ali are being put together quickly on both broadcast and cable networks, with ABC’s 20/20, CBS’s 48 Hours and Spike TV airing tributes to The Greatest on Saturday night and 60 Minutes re-airing its 1996 interview with Ali. We will update this post as more specials are announced, so keep checking back:

I Am The Greatest:  The Adventures Of Muhammad Ali
El Rey Network, June 8 beginning at 10 PM ET
The network will pay tribute to with a marathon of all 13 half-hour episodes of the 1977 animated series which is making its cable premiere. The series aired on Saturday mornings on NBC in 1977 with voices provided by Ali and his real-life publicist Frank Bannister and featured the pair traveling  the country fighting crime and solving mysteries both real and supernatural.
MONDAY
The Greatest
Bounce TV, 10 PM ET/9 PM CT
Bounce TV will air a special presentation of The Greatest, the 1977 motion picture in which Ali appeared as himself. The dramatization of Ali’s life starts with his winning the heavyweight gold medal at the 1960 Olympic Games and continues through his defeat of George Foreman at the legendary Rumble in the Jungle.
SUNDAY
60 Minutes: The Greatest
CBS, 7 PM
60 Minutes revisits this classic 1996 segment on Muhammad Ali. Ed Bradley’s touching profile shows a former athlete still adored by fans, who won’t let Parkinson’s syndrome prevent him from helping others or affect his sharp wit. John Hamlin is the producer.

British Actor Duane Henry Lands on CBS Drama "NCIS" as Possible Series Regular

“NCIS” has added yet another cast member. British actor Duane Henry has joined the current season in a recurring role with the option to continue into next season.  Henry will play MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves. He will make his debut in the final two episodes of the current 13th season.
Clayton Reeves rose above his British blue-collar roots to become a successful government agent. The character is described as offbeat and fun with swagger to spare, with professional confidence that’s impossible to disregard. To say Reeves has burned some bridges in the international intelligence community is an understatement, but he owns the choices he’s made and he’s determined to do what’s right. Behind steely eyes and a strong, no-nonsense demeanor is a killer smile and a sense of humor to match.

“We think we found something really special in Duane Henry,” said Gary Glasberg, executive producer and “NCIS” showrunner. “His unique blend of charm, heart and athletic physicality is going to be a great addition to the mix. Everyone at ‘NCIS’ is excited to have him join us.”
Born in Birmingham, England, Henry has credits that include many popular U.K. series including “Law & Order: U.K.,” “The Bill” and “Doctor Who.” In 2010, he was nominated for BAFTA’s Screen Nation Award for best emerging talent.

Justin Cornwell Cast as Co-Lead in CBS's "Training Day" Pilot

Young Chicago actor Justin Cornwell has landed the co-lead opposite Bill Paxton in CBS’ drama pilot Training Day.

Written by Will Beall and directed by Danny Cannon, Training Day is a present-day reimagining of Antoine Fuqua’s acclaimed 2001 feature. Set 15 years after the film left off, the show centers on a bright, gung-ho, idealistic young African-American police officer, Kyle Craig (Cornwell), who is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with seasoned, morally ambiguous detective Frank Rourke (Paxton).
Cornwell’s Kyle is one of the good guys — an LAPD cop who is fearless in the face of terrible odds and driven to avenge the murder of his father, also a cop. Tapped to go undercover, Kyle is reassigned to the Special Investigation Section, where he’s supposed to take down rogue cop Rourke.
Cornwell, who started his acting career at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, is a local actor who has done guest stints on two series that film in the Windy City —  Fox’s Empire and NBC’s Chicago P.D. He also had a small part in Spike Lee Chicago-themed movie Chi-Raq.

Regina Taylor Cast as Co-Lead in ‘Time After Time’ ABC Pilot

I’ll Fly Away lead actress Regina Taylor is set for a key co-starring role opposite Freddie Stroma, Josh Bowman and Genesis Rodriguez in Kevin Williamson’s ABC pilot Time After Time.
Using the 1979 novel by Karl Alexander and movie as a starting point, Time After Time will chronicle the epic adventures of young H.G. Wells (Stroma).
Taylor will play trusted Wells’ ally Vanessa Anders, the billionaire businesswoman who owns and protects the Time Machine in 2016 New York City. Confident and strong, she has a warm welcoming smile, but make no mistake, she’s also a respected, sometimes feared CEO.
Williamson wrote Time After Time and is executive producing. Marcos Siega is directing. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.
Taylor recently co-starred on the USA limited series Dig and previously was a regular on the CBS military drama The Unit.

Blair Underwood to Star in ABC Drama Pilot

Blair Underwood is set as the male lead in ABC’s untitled Meaghan Oppenheimer drama pilot, executive produced by Reese Witherspoon. Written by Oppenheimer, the project follows the personal and professional life of Gemma, a ruthless divorce attorney in Dallas, which begins to unravel when her emotionally damaged, love-addicted sister resurfaces, triggering self-destructive tendencies and exposing long-hidden family secrets.
Underwood will play James, Gemma’s boss and sometime-lover. Gemma’s law professor and mentor for years, who instilled in her a sense of cutthroat ambition, he is the one person unafraid to belittle her.
Underwood’s last turn starring in a television series was on NBC’s quickly-canceled remake of “Ironside.”  His availability put Underwood in high demand this pilot season with multiple offers.  He most recently worked with ABC and ABC Studios on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where he had a recurring role. Underwood will next be seen in a guest stint on CBS’ The Good Wife.

Meagan Good and Boris Kodjoe Join CBS Medical Drama "Code Black"

Paging all doctors—Boris Kodjoe and Meagan Good are reporting for duty.
The two stars are set to join the CBS primetime medical drama, CODE BLACK. Kodjoe will star as Dr. Will Campbell whose expertise and ego shake things up with the current surgical team.
Meagan Good (Minority Report) joins the cast of in a recurring role as Dr. Grace Adams, an attending physician who returns to the OR after a year of humanitarian work in Haiti. Her return could reignite romance with a fellow doctor.
Both stars will begin their stints on the show in February.

Antoine Fuqua and Jerry Bruckheimer Team to Bring "Training Day" TV Series to CBS

According to Variety.com, CBS is producing a pilot based on the 2001 movie “Training Day,” which starred Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, and for which Washington won an Academy Award for Best Actor.  The television adaptation is set in the present-day Los Angeles Police Department, with the series picking up 15 years after the events of the Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures film.
The original “Training Day” movie director Antoine Fuqua is attached as director and executive producer for the series, and has teamed up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer  for the reboot.  Will Beall (“Gangster Squad,” “Castle”), a former LAPD detective, will write the pilot script, also serving as an executive producer.
“Training Day” followed a rookie cop (played by Hawke) who was paired with a rogue detective (Washington) on his first day on the job as a Los Angeles narcotics officer.
The television project will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Fuqua Films and Warner Bros. TV for CBS.

Cicely Tyson and Rita Moreno Among 2015 Kennedy Center Honorees

Cicely Tyson, Rita Moreno, George Lucas, singer-songwriter Carole King, conductor Seiji Ozawa and the Eagles have been selected to receive this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, the center said Wednesday.
The artists will be celebrated Dec. 6 at a gala to be broadcast Dec. 29 on CBS.  President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are expected to attend along with other notables from the worlds of showbiz, politics and business.
The Honors gala, now in its 38th year, will again cap a weekend of celebrations to include a private dinner at the U.S. State Department the preceding evening hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry. Honorees receive their colorful medallions at that event. In addition, the Obamas will host honorees and others at the White House prior to the gala performance.
Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein saluted this year’s selections, which were chosen based on the recommendation of the Center’s Special Honors Advisory Committee. Other input is offered by the center’s board of trustees, its artists committee and the public.
Rubenstein praised Tyson for her range of strong female roles on stage and screen that “have broken boundaries for women of color,” and said Moreno’s “iconic spitfire roles” are embedded in the heart of American culture, while Ozawa’s artistic leadership as a conductor has “set a new standard for orchestras around the world.” He
Rubenstein said the music of the Eagles “has endured as the quintessential American rock and roll sound for generations.” The core band members to be feted are Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh.
King, another pop hitmaker, has a canon of “heartfelt lyrics and tunes (that) are woven throughout the tapestry of American music.” Films from Lucas have “enriched our world with stories of epic adventure,” said the KenCen chieftain.
Kennedy Center president Deborah Rutter said the latest slate of honorees shares a powerful common theme — artists as history-makers and artists who defy both convention and category. “Each honoree and their career-spanning achievements exemplify a rare quality of artistic bravery,” she said. “They have pushed the limits of their gifts as musicians, actors, and storytellers to inspire generations of Americans and those around the world.”

Actor Justin Hires Cast in Chris Tucker Role for CBS' "Rush Hour" Series Pilot

Actor Justin Hires has been cast in the Chris Tucker role in CBS’ drama pilot adaptation of the “Rush Hour” film franchise.
Hires had a small part in 2012’s “21 Jump Street” and more recently has made appearances on Comedy Central’s “Key and Peele.” In the Warner Bros. TV pilot he’ll play a cocky, maverick LAPD detective who is assigned to work on a case with a stoic detective from Hong Kong. Jon Foo has already been cast in the role played by Jackie Chan opposite comedian Tucker in three “Rush Hour” features.

Comedy scribes Bill Lawrence and Blake McCormick wrote the script for the TV redo and are executive producing with the director and producer of New Line Cinema’s “Rush Hour” pics — Brett Ratner and Arthur Sarkissian — and Jeff Ingold of Lawrence’s Doozier Prods. Jon Turteltaub is directing the pilot and also executive producing.
Hires got his start out of college as an on-air personality for the MTVU cable channel. He’s also produced sketch comedy videos for various YouTube outlets.
