Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton Help Lifetime Celebrate Black History Month

The Lifetime network is celebrating Black History month by airing three original TV movies in February, the network announced Wednesday.  Among the offerings is Betty & Coretta, starring Mary J. Blige, and Twist of Faith, starring Toni Braxton. 
Betty & Coretta premieres Saturday, February 2, at 8 p.m. ET.  As previously reported, Mary plays Malcolm X‘s widow, Dr. Betty Shabazz, in the movie.  The film focuses on the friendship Shabazz forged with Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s widow, Coretta Scott King — portrayed in the film by Angela Bassett — after the deaths of their husbands.
On February 9, Toni fans get to see her in Twist of Faith, airing at 8 p.m. ET.  In the movie, she plays a single Christian mom, whose love of music brings her closer to an Orthodox Jewish widower.

The editors at Essence magazine have been hard at work this fall on a new tome celebrating first lady Michelle Obama’s life and achievements. A Salute to Michelle Obama, available now in paperback, features an array of images of the first lady punctuated with essays penned by legendary black women. Yet, what makes it special are quotes from African-American female fans of Mrs. Obama interwoven through this compendium of her accomplishments.

“We reached out to women and asked, ‘What do you believe has been the impact of Michelle Obama?’” Patrik Henry Bass, Senior Editor at Essence, told theGrio. He was inundated with streams of enthusiastic praise in response from the Essence audience.  “I was surprised, in a delightful way,” he said of women’s reactions.

Academy Award nominated actress Angela Bassett is set to star and co-executive produce a new legal drama on NBC titled Vanishing Point.  According to Deadline, NBC closed a deal for the show that was penned by Source Code writer, Ben Ripley, who will executive produce the drama that is produce by SONY TV alongside SONY TV-based producers Deborah Spera and Maria Grasso.
