Tops In Tech: African-American Innovators To Be Honored

There are the Oscars. The BET Awards. The MTV Awards. But did you know there was an awards ceremony for the top African Americans in technology? People who are working to make our lives better through new innovations?
Black Money just released the names of 2012′s “50 Most Important African-Americans in Technology,” who will be honored on January 15, 2013 in Washington, DC at the Innovation & Equity Symposium. The theme for this year is “Keeping America First in Technology: Public Innovation and Supplier Diversity.”

Wells Fargo to Support Scholarships at State-Operated HBCUs

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has announced that it has entered into a multi-year $1.7 million partnership with the Wells Fargo Foundation to provide scholarships and leadership development training for students at 47 state-operated historically Black colleges and universities.
To qualify for the scholarships students at the HBCUs need to have a grade point average of 3.0 or above, demonstrate financial need, and show the potential for leadership.
In addition, Wells Fargo will continue to support the TMCF’s Teacher Quality and Retention Program (TQRP) that supports Black men who are committed to a career in teaching.
“Thanks to Wells Fargo’s generosity and ongoing partnership, a cadre of extremely talented future leaders will be able to earn a college degree,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., TMCF’s president and CEO. “In addition, Wells Fargo’s commitment allows HBCU’s to continue their tradition of producing highly qualified and committed classroom teachers. Wells Fargo’s support to the TQRP initiative will have a lasting impact, helping us educate American children in communities all across the country.”

The rapper turned actor/director’s feature film directorial debut, and one of the projects that made it on my fall 2012 list of films to see, The Man With The Iron Fists, will see a USA theatrical release on November 2. It stars RZA himself, Russell Crowe, Pam Grier, Lucy Liu and others; Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth served as producers on this $20 million project.

Rasheed Wallace Will Come Out of Retirement and Join Knicks

15-year NBA veteran Rasheed Wallace, who last played in the league during the ’09-’10 season, has been working out with the New York Knicks over the last week and reportedly informed the team that he will sign with them this season.

Wallace, who last played for the Boston Celtics, did play for head coach Mike Woodson before. Woodson was an assistant coach to Larry Brown on the 2004 Detroit Pistons who won the NBA championship.

Teen Runs Into Burning House And Saves Two Year-Old Boy

A brave 16-year-old boy in Southampton, Hampshire in the United Kingdom risked his own life after running in a burning home to save a 2-year-old boy, Adam, the Southern Daily Echo reports.
Nelson Fonangwan was awaken by the screams of his neighbor, Aneta Jedlikoswka, whose child was locked inside of her burning house. When the teen reached the mom, she was frantic.
“She didn’t speak good English and she pointed to me inside the house and said ‘baby’, I knew I had to do something so that’s when I helped by breaking the rest of the glass and I went in and got the baby,” Fonangwan told The Echo.
“The smoke was really thick you couldn’t even breathe, I don’t know how the baby was coping because I was choking. I didn’t think too much because it was frantic but once I heard baby I thought I have to do this. I was a bit nervous though because it was fire.
“When I brought her baby out, she was really relieved her arm was really bad she hugged him tight.”

Shonda Rhimes Sells Dramedy and Comedy Projects To ABC

Deadline.com reported today that “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice” creator/Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes is expanding the reach of her Shondaland banner into half-hour comedy and hour-long dramedy at ABC. Rhimes and her producing partner, Betsy Beers, have set up “I Hate L.A. Dudes,” written by “The Misadventures Of An Awkward Black Girl” creator and star Issa Rae and “The Mix,” by John Hoffman (“Igor”). Wall Street Preparing For Obama Victory As Romney Falls Behind In Polls

NEW YORK — As President Barack Obama widened his lead over Mitt Romney in polls this month, traders at hedge funds and investment firms began shooting emails to clients with a similar theme: It’s time to start preparing for an Obama victory.
What many in the market worry about isn’t that high earners may pay more in taxes if Obama wins. They worry that federal spending cuts and tax hikes scheduled for 2013 will kick in on Jan. 1 and start pulling the country into another recession. The higher taxes and lower spending would total $600 billion. They take effect automatically unless Congress and the White House reach a deal before then.
