Venus Williams Ends Long Victory Drought At Luxemborg Open

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 21 (UPI) — Venus Williams earned her first victory since February 2010 Sunday, downing Romania’s Monica Niculescu in the final of the Luxembourg Open.  Williams dispatched Niculescu 6-2, 6-3, snapping the longest victory drought in the 32-year-old former world No. 1’s career. Her previous victory came at the 2010 Acapulco event.

“Coming to the tournament this week I was just trying to play well,” Williams said. “I didn’t know if I could win this event, so to stand here as the winner is a wonderful way for me to end the year, and it really makes me look forward to next year as well.”  Niculescu was appearing in just her second career final after falling to Victoria Azarenka at the 2011 Luxembourg event.

Gabby Douglas Wins Sportswoman of Year Award

NEW YORK (AP) — Olympic all-around champion Gabby Douglas has won Sportswoman of the Year honors from the Women’s Sports Foundation.  The gymnast won the award Wednesday night, beating out Lindsey Vonn, London Olympians Serena Williams, Missy Franklin, Allyson Felix, and Paralympians Jessica Long and Tatyana McFadden. Douglas is the third gymnast to win the award, joining fellow Olympic gold medalists Mary Lou Retton (1984) and Nastia Liukin (2008). Liukin presented Douglas with the award, given to an individual athlete who exhibits exceptional performances. Douglas won the all-around gold at the London Olympics, the fourth American — and first African-American — to win gymnastics’ biggest prize. She also helped the U.S. women to the team title, their first since 1996 and second overall.

Tennessee State Welcomes 97-Year-Old Alumna Cheerleader At Homecoming

Recently, Tennessee State University, the historically Black educational institution in Nashville, held its homecoming weekend. At the football game that weekend, 97-year-old alumna Burnece Walker Brunson joined the cheerleading squad on the sidelines. “Cheering for your favorite players and entertaining your fans feels like you are also part of the game,” Brunson said.
Brunson was a member of the university cheerleading team from 1934 to 1935 when the institution was known as Tennessee A&I College. “We didn’t do all of those fancy stuff back then,” Brunson recalls. “We did some jumps here and there but we did not do all that tossing and throwing. It fulfilled my desire to stay physically active since there were not many sporting activities for girls during those days.”
Brunson is a native of Tennessee but grew up in Chicago. She turned to her home state for college in 1933 and joined the cheerleading team the next year. After obtaining her teaching certificate, she went back to Chicago and earned a bachelor’s degree from Chicago Teacher’s College and a master’s degree from the National College of Education in Evansville, Illinois.

Penny Hardaway Agrees To Join Group Of Minority Owners for NBA’s Grizzlies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and his wife, Ashley, and former NBA player Penny Hardaway have agreed to join the group of minority owners for the Memphis Grizzlies, said a person familiar with the deal.

The Mannings and Hardaway join a minority group that includes singer and actor Justin Timberlake and a couple Memphis businessmen, the person told The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because prospective buyer Robert J. Pera’s purchase of the Grizzlies is pending approval by the NBA.

Rasheed Wallace Will Come Out of Retirement and Join Knicks

15-year NBA veteran Rasheed Wallace, who last played in the league during the ’09-’10 season, has been working out with the New York Knicks over the last week and reportedly informed the team that he will sign with them this season.

Wallace, who last played for the Boston Celtics, did play for head coach Mike Woodson before. Woodson was an assistant coach to Larry Brown on the 2004 Detroit Pistons who won the NBA championship.

US Paralympic Star Jerome Singleton Talks Success On And Off The Track

Even as a child growing up in South Carolina, Jerome Singleton Jr. displayed a natural talent for sports.
In seventh-grade, he made his middle school’s basketball team. By the time he reached seventeen he was one of the top 100 high school football players in the state. Singleton says he was able to compete alongside his able-bodied peers not only because of sporting prowess, but due to an unyielding determination to succeed. “I believe I have been blessed with a gift to excel in different facets of my life.”
The middle child of three children, Singleton recalls a loving and supportive family home. He credits his parents, Jerome and Jacqueline, for their selfless support and high expectations, despite his disability. Born in July 1986 and raised in Greenwood, South Carolina, Singleton was born without a fibula and had his right leg amputated below the knee when he was just 18 months old. Talking about overcoming challenges, he says, “I want to show people they can change their life.”

NBA champion Dwyane Wade has hosted his first fashion fundraiser Thursday evening in Miami for his philanthropic organization, Wade’s World Foundation.  A Night on the RunWade included live performances, a scrumptious three-course dinner, and a fashion show featuring clothing from the likes of Dsquared2, Versace and The Webster. The Miami Heat player made his catwalk debut and wooed the audience with a backward somersault as he walked the runway.

For many years, Jay-Z closed out his concerts with “Encore,” a soothing, triumphant number from “The Black Album,” which at the time of its release in 2003 was billed as something of a retirement. “From Marcy to Madison Square,” he rapped, sketching an arc that had taken him from a Brooklyn housing project to headlining the most symbolically important arena in the country.

That used to be enough, goal-wise, but no musician has reframed the potential for bucket-list completion and brand extension like Jay-Z, who in the past decade has consistently sought new ceilings to break through. That journey brought him to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday night, for the first show of a sold-out eight-night run in this new rusty bunker that will house the Brooklyn Nets, a team that he owns a small piece of, and for which he is the unofficial ambassador.

Jackson State University Launches Its Own Sports Broadcasting Network

Jackson State University in Mississippi has launched a new sports broadcasting network that will allow alumni and other fans of the university’s sports teams to watch action on television and over the internet. Home football games this season are now being shown live on the internet and broadcast on FM radio. Television broadcasts of the football games, produced by the Jackson State network, can be seen on tape delay over Comcast Sports South.
The network will also produce post-game television shows that will include highlights and commentary by head football coach Rick Comegy. The radio network that will carry live football broadcasts has been expanded from 6 to 12 stations. Another 18 stations will carry some live football broadcasts but not all home games.
The network will also stream live online broadcasts of other sports at Jackson State.
