Jay-Z Comes Home to Repay a Debt to Brooklyn, Performs At Newly-Opened Barclays Center

Richard Perry/The New York Times

For many years, Jay-Z closed out his concerts with “Encore,” a soothing, triumphant number from “The Black Album,” which at the time of its release in 2003 was billed as something of a retirement. “From Marcy to Madison Square,” he rapped, sketching an arc that had taken him from a Brooklyn housing project to headlining the most symbolically important arena in the country.

That used to be enough, goal-wise, but no musician has reframed the potential for bucket-list completion and brand extension like Jay-Z, who in the past decade has consistently sought new ceilings to break through. That journey brought him to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday night, for the first show of a sold-out eight-night run in this new rusty bunker that will house the Brooklyn Nets, a team that he owns a small piece of, and for which he is the unofficial ambassador.

Known around the globe as a hip-hop pioneer, Russell Simmons’ passion for breaking new talent, particularly among urban youth, is well-documented and well-respected.  What largely flies under the radar, though, is his patronage of the arts in all forms, from the turntable to the easel, and his belief in the transformative effect that exposure to culture and having artistic outlets can have on the lives of urban youth.

NEW YORK (AP) — The “American Idol” judges’ panel is now complete with the naming of singer-rapper Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban.  The Fox network officially tapped the pair with an announcement Sunday, just hours before the first round of judging for next season was due to begin in New York.

The announcement also settles the status of Randy Jackson. He will stay put as the sole remaining original “Idol” judge, scotching rumors of a different role for him on the popular talent competition.

This trio joins newcomer Mariah Carey on a judges panel now expanded to four members from its previous three.  They fill vacancies left by Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, who announced their exits in July.  “American Idol” returns for its 12th season in January.

BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP) — Mariah Carey was late to the BMI Urban Music Awards, where she was the guest of honor, but that didn’t stop other artists from literally singing her praises.

Fantasia Barrino and Eric Benet were among those who serenaded the star with her own hits. Benet performed “One Sweet Day” and the former “American Idol” sang “Hero” during the private ceremony at the Saban Theatre, where writers, producers and publishers of the year’s top urban hits were recognized Friday.

Dr. Dre Tops Jay-Z & Kanye West As Biggest Earner on Forbes’ “Hip-Hop Cash Kings” List

*Dr. Dre has out-earned Sean “Diddy” Combs and Shawn “Jay Z Carter to land atop Forbes magazine’s Hip-Hop Cash Kings list, with earnings of $110 million in the past year.

The financial haul, made between May, 2011, and May, 2012, was largely from sales of his Beats By Dre headphones.  Diddy came in a distant second with $45 million, while Jay Z banked $38 million to land third.

His “Watch The Throne” partner Kanye West was close behind with $35 million.  Lil Wayne placed fifth with $27 million, while his Cash Money Records cohorts Drake, Bryan ‘Baby’ Williams and Nicki Minaj – the only female in the top 10 – all follow in sixth, seventh and eighth position, respectively.  Eminem and Ludacris round out the rest of the top 10.
