The source says Roberts appreciated the network’s understanding of her recent medical issues. In June 2012, Roberts announced on air that she had been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare blood disorder. After undergoing a successful bone marrow transplant in September of that year, Roberts took a six month sabbatical from GMA to convalesce. She returned to the show full time after Labor Day weekend. “She made it clear to her reps that she wanted them to drive a fair deal but didn’t want to create any kind of bidding war,” the source revealed. While ABC agreed to Roberts’ deal, it could come back to haunt them at the bargaining table. GMA has also had to negotiate salary requirements for its two other hosts, Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer, at the same time as Roberts. “They’ve been a victim of their own success,” said a source who placed Roberts’ deal at $14 million.
“The question is: If Robin got that big a deal, can they open their pocketbooks for everybody? The show’s been a success as an ensemble, but now every part of that ensemble wants to get paid.” Talks with the other anchors are reportedly in progress. However, other reports have claimed Elliott and Spencer’s representatives are looking at other networks.
In related news, anchor George Stephanopoulos has apparently been resigned through 2014. GMA’s most recent season has seen it claim the no. 1 morning news show spot from NBC’s “Today” show.
