WASHINGTON — Jamison Ross sauntered onstage at the National Museum of Natural History here on Saturday with the solicitous gleam of a casino floor manager, his bulky frame encased in a suit and his face bearing a wide-open smile. Graciously, he initiated a round of applause for his fellow hopefuls in the 25th-annualThelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, and another for the event’s unflappable house band. Then he sat down, picked up a pair of brushes and counted off “Bye Bye Blues,” an uncomplicated song recorded by dozens of American entertainers from the 1930s on.

Known around the globe as a hip-hop pioneer, Russell Simmons’ passion for breaking new talent, particularly among urban youth, is well-documented and well-respected.  What largely flies under the radar, though, is his patronage of the arts in all forms, from the turntable to the easel, and his belief in the transformative effect that exposure to culture and having artistic outlets can have on the lives of urban youth.

On The X Factor this week, 17-year-old Willie Jones delivered a performance that left the show’s judges in complete awe.  The Shreveport, Louisiana native took to the stage rocking a Kid ‘n Play old-school high-top haircut along with a cut off jean jacket, and shocked judges when he began singing “Your Man,” a country music hit by Josh Turner.
“Your voice is a sensational recording voice and I want to remember this time, the first day I heard Willie Jones,” Simon said after Willie’s performance.
“Willie Jones you are an absolute original. He sounds like a Willie Jones right? It’s perfect. That was amazing,” praised L.A. Reid.
Britney Spears took to twitter to show some love for Willie, who is from her home state of Louisiana. “Willie’s from my home state! @LouisianaBredAndButtered I bet y’all weren’t expecting that voice. I know I wasn’t…,” she tweeted.

NEW YORK (AP) — The “American Idol” judges’ panel is now complete with the naming of singer-rapper Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban.  The Fox network officially tapped the pair with an announcement Sunday, just hours before the first round of judging for next season was due to begin in New York.

The announcement also settles the status of Randy Jackson. He will stay put as the sole remaining original “Idol” judge, scotching rumors of a different role for him on the popular talent competition.
This trio joins newcomer Mariah Carey on a judges panel now expanded to four members from its previous three.  They fill vacancies left by Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, who announced their exits in July.  “American Idol” returns for its 12th season in January.
